The AT&T Pioneers US Map Painting at Oxford Central School on Saturday August 12th and Sunday August 13th involved many different students from the Warren Hills Regional HS, Warren Technical HS and three AT&T Pioneers. The map was painted at the agreement of the School Superintendent Mr. Bob Magnuson and paid for by the AT&T Pioneers, a community service organization made up of current and retired AT&T volunteers.

The goal was to finish the map before the elementary students came back to school after summer break. In order to accomplish this, Student Volunteer coordinator, Rebecca Sigman from the Warren Hills Regional High School National Honor Society was able to obtain volunteers among her fellow NHS members, Warren Technical HS NHS and from the Warren Hills Girls Field Hockey team. All the ladies looked forward to painting and seeing their friends before school started. There was lots of talking while the painting commenced, but even with all the fun discussion, it took less than 8 hours for all the volunteers to complete the painting and clean-up.
One of the challenges of this map was that it was installed over top of another map which was painted over five years ago by the Girl Scouts. In addition, the surface was very rough so a lot of prep was done the day before to remove all the loose rocks and remove any sediment from the cracks.  Mr. Magnuson was glad to have the map installed and sent a nice email letter of thanks to the Pioneers. He was happy with the work which was completed at the school.

Food donations for the volunteers were obtained from Dunkin’ Donuts and Quick Check of Washington NJ. Home Depot of Hackettstown donated $25 toward painting supplies. Washington Sherwin Williams Paint store accommodated the group by applying the Pioneers National Account discount and tax exemption on the $250 paint purchase. The paint was paid for by the AT&T Telecom Pioneers Liberty Garden Chapter. All the donations were obtained through the hard work of Rebecca the NHS volunteer coordinator and came to approximately $500.

It was a wonderful coordination of volunteer efforts by the local NHS and Pioneers. The students were rewarded by giving back to the Oxford Central sending district school and earning community service hours. NJ AT&T Pioneer President, Michael Hickey sent a letter of thanks directly to Rebecca and copied the high school NHS advisors, Mr. Magnuson and WH Field Hockey coach. Pioneer Project Coordinator, Fran Long and Rebecca sent letters of thanks to all the businesses who donated toward the map project.

A follow up meeting at the school will be arranged so Rebecca can give a gift of supplies to the teachers to help them use the map in their teaching plans.
