Pioneers Rock! by Jackie Steffgen
Photo above: On behalf of the AT&T Pioneer Volunteers, Gerry and Jackie Steffgen delivered two child-size rockers to GiGi’s Playhouse in Tinley Park today. GiGi’s Playhouse serves children and adults of all ages. The Playhouse provides educational and therapeutic programs at no charge to families and in a format that individuals with Down Syndrome learn best. All programs aim to maximize self-confidence and empower individuals to achieve their greatest potential.
Illinois Life Member Pioneers have a 2015 goal of distributing 40 rocking chairs to comfort people during a difficult time. They paid attention to selecting facilities where the need was the greatest and the rockers were a wonderful addition to every facility selected. The response to this project was overwhelmingly positive and everyone has been so appreciative of the rockers. This new project “Pioneers Rock” was rolled out mid-July and in a short three months, 59 rocking chairs have been donated to facilities such as The Ronald McDonald House, VA Homes, retirement and nursing homes, domestic violence shelters, children’s museums, elementary school libraries, physically challenged and special needs facilities throughout the State of Illinois. The rocking chairs are bringing great comfort to many adults and children in our communities and they are enhancing the learning experience for children as well.
It’s our hope that the rockers will provide great comfort to those in our communities for many years to come. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile project or recommend a facility that could use a rocking chair, please contact us.
